Root canal treatment is a routine procedure used to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. It involves removing the infected nerve tissue inside the root of the tooth, cleaning the area thoroughly, and then sealing it with a special filling. You might need a root canal if you have a dental abscess, deep decay, or damage caused by trauma.

What to Expect at Your Root Canal Treatment Appointments?

Local Anaesthetic

We’ll start by numbing the tooth fully so you’re completely comfortable.

Isolation

A rubber dam (a thin latex sheet) is placed to keep the area clean and dry.

Cleaning the Root

We access the inside of the tooth and gently remove the nerve and infection.

X-ray & Measurement

We take a digital X-ray and use a special machine to find the end of the root.

Filling the Root

Once cleaned, the canals are filled and sealed.

Final Restoration

We then restore the tooth with either a filling, an inlay, or a crown, depending on the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

No. We use a local anaesthetic and always check that you are fully numb. If the tooth is severely infected, the anaesthetic might not be as effective. In that case, we’ll prescribe antibiotics and bring you back when it’s more comfortable.

Usually not. Root canal treatment often requires more than one visit, especially if the infection is severe or the tooth requires additional restoration.

Not always. But teeth that have had root canal treatment can become more brittle. A crown or onlay can help protect the tooth from future damage. In some cases, a standard filling may be a suitable and more cost-effective option if you are looking for a less expensive alternative.
