Summer in May: Why Sunscreen Matters More Than Ever

On 1st May, London hit 29.3°C, the hottest day ever recorded for the month. While we’re all loving the early sunshine, now’s the time to start thinking seriously about skin protection. Enjoying the sun is one of life’s simple pleasures, but protecting your skin while doing so is essential. A high-quality sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your skin from damage, premature ageing, and serious health risks like skin cancer.

Reapply Regularly

Wearing sunscreen once isn’t enough. Reapply it throughout the day, especially if you’re swimming, sweating, or spending extended time outdoors. Water, heat, and friction can all reduce its effectiveness, so top up at least every two hours.

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreens: What’s the Difference?

Physical (Mineral) Sunscreen

These formulas contain ingredients that sit on the surface of your skin and reflect UV rays.

Pros: Gentle on sensitive skin, work immediately after application

Cons: Often thicker, can leave a chalky cast

Chemical Sunscreen

These absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin.

Pros: Lightweight, easy to apply

Cons: May cause irritation or allergic reactions, needs to be applied 20–30 minutes before sun exposure

UVA vs UVB Rays: Why Broad Spectrum Matters

  • UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are associated with premature ageing.
  • UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and are closely linked to skin cancer.

Look for a sunscreen labelled broad spectrum to ensure you’re protected against both.

What Is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how effectively your sunscreen protects you from harmful UVB rays. The higher the number, the more protection it offers. SPF helps shield your skin from sunburn, long-term damage, and even skin cancer. That’s why daily SPF is a non-negotiable for healthy, glowing skin, even on cloudy days.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re enjoying a sunny walk in the park or heading off on holiday, sunscreen is a must. Apply generously, reapply often, and make it part of your everyday routine.

Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on it; it’s also about what you protect it from.
